Google TV

In their continual steamroll towards dominating your life Google have unveiled their next venture, Google TV. It’s set to launch this year and aims to truly merge the internet and television experience.

Google TV is a new experience for television that combines the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet. With Google Chrome built in, you can access all of your favorite websites and easily move between television and the web. This opens up your TV from a few hundred channels to millions of channels of entertainment across TV and the web. Your television is also no longer confined to showing just video. With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV — it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.

The platform is built on both Chrome and Android and is open to developers to create applications specifically for Google TV. In addition, all those applications which currently run on android mobile phones that do not required phone specific features will run out of the box.

Further,, Google has teamed up with Intel who will supply Atom processors to power the system. Google TV will initially be distributed as a separate set-top box made by Logitech but will soon see direct integration into TV’s with Sony pledging to provide support.

I imagine the Yahoo exec who murmured those infamous words last month of ‘to be successful Google needs to expand… they’re only known for search.’ Lets have a quick count; Search, YouTube, Mail, Documents, Voice, Maps, Earth, Chrome,, Android, Picasa, Wave, Buzz, Reader, Latitude, AdSense and now TV. Maybe they should think long and hard about diversifying.
