Microsoft CEO hints at new form factors for Xbox 360s

On Thursday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was supposed to be talking about cloud computing however when a Q&A session digressed he let slip some rather interesting comments about upcoming Xbox 360 units. Xbox 360 Slim anyone?

Responding to a question about hardware diversity, not specifically directed towards the Xbox 360, a seeming concerned Ballmer has this to say:

“We actually have a TV implementation in some senses built into Windows. It works really well for small screen TVs that you might call a PC, but for that big screen device here’s a piece of hardware that we build, there’s no diversity. You get exactly the Xboxes that we build for you. We may have more form factors in the future that are designed for various price points and options, but we think it’s going to [be] important.”

Generic comment? Yes and no. Its rather likely that Microsoft has some other SKUs in the lineup for the future. The company have expressed their desire to have the console replace set-top boxes and DVRs in living rooms and with Natal launching this year it seems likely that future models may implement the hardware internally allowing for only a very small peripheral camera device.
