Apple iSlate / Tablet Specs “Revealed”

January 4th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

As is typically the case as we approach the home straight towards the launch of a new Apple product information has leaked online which purports to show the specifications of the upcoming Apple Tablet. The documents contained herein are the so-called development documents of the device many are calling the iSlate.

Rumour site phoneArena are claiming today that they have received said documents. So, lets take a look as the candidate device. To start with the information would suggest that this device will sport a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR3 Ram and a 120GB HDD. In addition to these are two USB ports, an iSight camera, the usual wireless and wired connectivity all running on a 7.1″ Multi-touch, intelligent feedback display behind a new iteration of OS X named Clouded Leopard v 10.7.

The screen certainly sounds plausible as do the ports and the build in iSight camera and who knows, maybe the intelligent feedback screen will turn out to be Apple’s patented and heavily speculated dynamic feedback technology. The documents also state that the device will be housed my a precision aluminium unibody enclosure which is of course a no-brainer considering Apple’s recent move towards stylish metal designs.

Now, before you run into the street naked proclaiming the end of the PC and start of the mobile computing revolution lets take a moment to consider these specifications. This thing would sport the same component specs as the 12 month old MacBook I am currently using which, by my reckoning is a tad too much for a device of this sort. I may be wrong but unless Apple is targeting this device at hadron-colliding engineers, this much power seems unlikely.

The seemingly exaggerated specifications there lies another problem with these documents. The name of the operating system itself, “Clouded Leopard”. Not only is this an ill-fitted name it would seem to overcomplicate Apple’s current OS lineup of OS X Snow Leopard and the iPhone OS. Something more in the region of Snow Leopard Mobile would seem more fitting and less… fumbled. A widget-based homescreen with “Tunes, Time Machine, QuickLook, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, Photo Booth and Front Row” all seem possible if not likely thought.

iSlate is a name that has never tickled my tech-buds and doesn’t sound all to Apple, instead sounding more like someone picked the name from a bag of discarded suggestions. I for one will be very disappointed it the device ends up sporting this name.

So, there you have it, one rumoured Apple Tablet specification sheet. Far be it from my role to convince you of the authenticity of these documents so take a read and decide for yourself. All I would say is don’t get your hopes up too high, 26 27 January should be a telling day.
