Toshiba Announce 64GB NAND Memory Module – iPhone Bound?
Following last week’s rumours that Taiwan-based manufacturer Foxconn had received orders to build the next iPhone, Toshiba have today announced their latest flash memory module. 64GB on a single NAND flash drive, the largest capacity in the industry. Six months before the iPhone 3GS was announced Toshiba announced their industry leading 32GB NAND chips which made their way into both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Is this a sign of things to come?
The current iPhone houses either a single 16GB or 32GB ship whilst the iPod touch has room for two such modules allowing for the current 64GB offered by Apple. Obviously this is entirely speculation but my money is on there being a 64GB next-gen iPhone.
Apple currently eats up a substantial slice of the worldwide NAND pie and reportedly consumes some 25% of worldwide flash memory production. As such, any developments in technology and capacity are always of particular interest in cupertino.
