iPhone developer Pandav have spotted usage records for an unreleased iPhone in their app’s analytics marking the first time the next-generation iPhone has been recorded in the wild.

PinchMedia who provides the analytics for the many iPhone application developers breaks down customer usage including what specific devices are using any given application. Thereafter the list of devices is reported to developers. Apple uses a simple nomenclature to identify its devices, the latest iPhone released to the public, the 3GS, carried the identification string “iPhone2,1″.

In this case however the device went by the name “iPhone3,1″ and was first spotted in use in Pandav’s usage logs in November focused in the San Francisco Bay Area where Apple is located. This “iPhone3,1″ identifier does not match up with any shipping iPhones. This is apparently the first time this iPhone model has been seen in the wild following its discovery in an August firmware update.

Apple began testing the iPhone 3GS (iPhone2,1) in October of 2008 about 8 months prior to its launch and in what is becoming somewhat of a tradition, the summer release of a new iPhone model would appear probable.
