Hell Hath Frozen Over: Apple Approves GMail App

For many iPhone users the Mail application provides a fantastic way of keeping up to date with all your incoming emails whilst on the move. In fact many owners have taken to using email solely on their phones if only for personal messages. One anomoly has been frustrating many iPhone users for a long time. If you use Yahoo Mail, or Microsoft Exchange, push emails via the Mail app is a doddle. If however you use the vastly popular and in my own oppinion best email service around, GMail, push notifications of incoming mail is a no go.

For those of you unfamiliar with precisely what push notifications allow for, it is essentially a notification system that alerts you to something, in this case a new email, almost instantaneously upon receipt by your email supplier’s server, ergo, no more having to enter the Mail app to manually check or getting the app to check at defined intervals which is a big drain on battery. Push support is quick, effective and battery efficient.

So why do push notifications exist for other providers and not GMail, your guess is as good as mine considering Apple and Google are on good terms, hell up until this week they shared some members from their respective board of directors. Whilst no integrated solution exists word on the web is that Apple has approved an app that uses its own push notification system to inform you that you have new GMail.

The app is called GPush and should be out on the App Store within days at the meager price of £0.59 for a limited time. I’ll certainly be checking it out.
