FIA take the back entrance
… or at least that’s probably how most teams and the fans feel about next years Formula 1 World Chanpionship.
The official rules for next year state at Rule 6 that the winner of the World Championship shall be the driver with the most race wins over the course of the season… great…
I can see it now, no more fighting for places, as soon as your out of the running just drop back, don’t damage the engine, drive slow and avoid collisions. Save the car if you have nothing else to race for. Did nobody raise this point in the boardroom?
Much has been said about this year’s rule changes and those in line for next year, most notably the budget cap of £40M. Several teams including Ferrari have expressed their dissatisfaction with this rule. In their (Ecclescum and Spank me Nazi) ultimate wisdom it was decided that next years budget will be on an opt in system effectively creating a two tier Championship. Teams who opt in will get untimited track testing time as well as a host of other benefits witheld from those who choose to flash the cash.
I can entirely understand the desire to implement a budget cap and it can only be good for the sport in the long-run. Considering the financial downturn the world faces it is both responsible and logical to cap the amounts spent by each team. Indeed as many as 12 new manufacturers have expressed an intrest in returning to or joining the World Championship should the rule be implemented. A two tier system of opt in/out is in no way good for the sport and will only make the current regulations even more comical.
If things stay as they are I honestly believe it could spell the end of the FIA and that certain major teams might defect IF another racing body were to be established. It’s time for FOTA (the drivers association) to take a stand. Mr Branson, you said you wanted in on Formula One, here’s your opportunity, Formula Virgin.
