Sling & Skype for iPhone – Ready to Go
Exciting stuff whether you own a Slingbox or not. I think I may have written a Geekly Update some time ago explaining how Sling worked and how incredible it is. Essentially its a box you hook up to your TV and internet and you can watch whatever is on your TV (DVD player, Digital recorder, Sky, Virgin, Xbox, Playstation) from anywhere in the world using any computer connected to the internet. Well, Sling has now submitted their iPhone application for Apple’s approval, which will almost certainly be given considering how long people have been screaming for this app to be available. If I had more than £12.90 left in my overdraft, i would most certainly be buying a Slingbox this week in anticipation. Imagine being able to watch anything you own and anything on TV or Sky from your iPhone, no matter where you are. Charlie, the gym would never be the same again. Greg, I’m sure we could find a little room for Golden Balls in lectures and Bareham, actually maybe this app has been around for a while, no wonder the economy is on its knees.
In addition an industry source announced today that Skype is ready to launch their iPhone app, and will likely display it at next weeks CTIA Wireless event. I can’t understand how Skype would be allowed to make available a VOIP application which could operate to the detriment of both O2 and Apple if enough people decided to use it as an alternative to eating into their minutes. However, there have been some services not dislike Skype available on the App Store for some time which have been successful. One in particular, Fring encompasses MSN Messenger (or Live Messenger… whatever), AIM and Skype all into one app. Maybe Skype missed the boat a little?
