Geekly Update 17/03/09 – The Big One!

March 19th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

Ok, where to start, I shall try and keep my excitement brief.

Firstly, cut, copy and paste fully implemented alongside almost 100 other new features introduced around 10 minutes ago. The new software will be in developer’s hands starting Tuesday, and is expected to be released this summer for our pleasure.

Copying and selecting is done using a double-tap technique, and you can drag to select a block of text or other content. You can also copy and paste between applications both Apple’s own and third party. Additionally the feature works for blocks of HTML and photos, also.

Landscape orientation is coming to all key applications. The new functionality will enable you to input using a larger keyboard in Mail, Notes and SMS – Get In! It does leave me wondering why I spent £.1.19 on a app to do this for me though hmmm oh well.

Next up, MMS support. Giving us all the ability to send and receive photos, contact information (using vCard, which will automatically add it to your Contact list), audio files and locations. The new Messages application (renamed from the current SMS app) not only supports MMS, but it can also forward and delete messages, either individually or multiply. Has apple been listening to my silent nightly prayers?

In term of new applications Apple will be introducing Voice Memos that enables you to use to record audio files. You can use the built-in microphone or an external microphone, edit the memo and share it by e-mail or MMS. I feel none of us may any longer be sending emails to each other, the Geekly Update may rank up this summer…

Search capabilities are being added to key applications including Mail, Calendar, iPod, and Notes. You’ll be able to search messages, From, To and Subject and all other headers. A nice little touch

The big one regarding search however is the implementation of Spotlight. For those of you unfortunate enough to only ever have used Windows retaining your Mac virginity Spotlight is an integrated search function which allows searching in real time rather than waiting for the computer (or phone) to search your hard drive (coz that’s what makes them Mactacular). Therefore you can search iPhone-wide for a word or phrase you need to find. By swiping left on the iPhone home screen as opposed to right you can access the search feature. So, if you don’t like keeping your apps organised and want to find one quickly you can search for it and access it immediately – Niiiiiiiiice.

Other small features include the ability to shake to shuffle your music alike the newest iPod nano, Wi-Fi automatic login (don’t ask coz I don’t know), stereo Bluetooth support for the A2DP profile (finally, now my bluetooth headphones that work with my TV and Macbook will work with my iPhone – Get In!), YouTube account log-in, auto-fill, anti-phishing, and extended parental controls (like you cared).

Of course the new update will be free for all us iPhoners. All that is left to say is… Bring on the Summer!

If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch. Apologies for the lack of witty and enormously entertaining writing you have come to expect, I am far too excited to have my brain type and think at the same time.
